Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's efforts to tu around the company haven't gone as plaed.
James Martin/CNETYahoo may still be painfully losing the war for web ads, mindshare and hot new products, but that won't be a problem for CEO Marissa Mayer. Yahoo's chief executive could get a $59 million payout even if the company is gobbled up by rivals and she ends up unceremoniously sacked, the Guardian reported Tuesday, based on Yahoo's most recent proxy statement.
The same report claims Mayer has already brought home $78 million since she became CEO in 2012, according to stock analyst firm MSCI. The potential addition of $59 million would bring Mayer's total eaings during her tenure at the troubled Inteet firm to $137 million.

Wayfair has tued itself into a go-to place to buy big and bulky home fuishings online. But, what if you don't know how to install that remote-controlled ceiling fan or put together that 60-inch double bathroom vanity piece?
Hoping to make it easier for folks to do home renovations using the Web, the Boston e-commerce company on Tuesday teamed up with Seattle startup Porch.com, which helps people find local handymen, electricians and plumbers. Now, Wayfair shoppers in Porch's 15 markets will be able to coect with professionals for needed installation, fuiture assembly or plumbing when making a purchase.
"We want to build the absolute best destination for home," Steve Oblak, Wayfair's general manager, said in an interview. "To do that we believe we have to have a comprehensive plan."
The deal points to continued development in the burgeoning market of online handy services, with Amazon launching its Home Services last year to compete with Angie's List, Pro.com, Yelp and others.
But, even with all the new players in household services and renovations, Porch CEO Matt Ehrlichman said all the online offerings combined are still tiny compared with the size of the total market.
"You put all the competitors together, and we've barely scratched the surface," he said.
The partnership is the first under a new Porch program to integrate its services with retailers both online and in-store, and more of these kinds of tie-ups will be coming this year, Ehrlichman said. Porch is already a partner with home-improvement retailer Lowe's, helping its customers coect with local workers including painters and landscapers.
Porch right now is available in the markets of Seattle, Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Houston, Washington, DC, Chicago, Phoenix, Orlando, Denver, Austin, San Beardino and Raleigh.

T-Mobile is pushing out Marshmallow for a couple of key Samsung devices.
GoogleT-Mobile subscribers with a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 can finally bite into the latest flavor of Android.
On Monday, the carrier aounced it will roll out Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to the two Samsung devices. T-Mobile's support pages describe how to check your S6 Edge+ and Note 5 to see if you need to run the update.
Marshmallow has had a slow rollout since its November debut. The lengthy wait is a side effect of Android's unwieldy upgrade process. Phone makers and wireless carriers must test each new version from Google for every device before they can plan and implement a rollout. That means Android users often have to wait months to receive the latest version.
But Marshmallow seems to be getting stickier as more companies push through the upgrade. Early this month, Google's Android Developers Dashboard revealed that the new version doubled its adoption rate over the course of a month. During the week ending April 4, Marshmallow had landed on 4.6 percent of all devices that visited the Google Play Store, up from 2.3 percent a month prior.
T-Mobile's update for the S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 will reach subscribers between April 18 and May 20. Consumers on a Wi-Fi coection will be prompted to download the software when it's available. You can also check for the update manually by tapping Setting, scrolling down to the System section and then tapping the About device setting. Tap Software Update and then OK to check for the update.
The Marshmallow update takes up a hefty 1.34 gigabytes, so you'll want to allow enough time and bandwidth to install it.

Uber's challenge to French laws may prove successful.
UberThe European Commission is reportedly readying itself to challenge French taxi laws following a complaint from ride-hailing service Uber.
A formal notice is set to be issued by the Commission, which will point out that the national law in France breaches a European Union treaty, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing "two people familiar with the matter."
The law in question means that chauffeured cars have to retu to a base in between customers and bans the use of geolocation software for finding cars or customers. Known as the Thevenoud law, the legislation was introduced in October 2014 and outlaws many of the technologies Uber relies upon.
Uber is arguing that the law favors traditional taxis over its own service and that France should have informed the Commission about its introduction. France will either have to come to an agreement with Europe or the Commission could refer the case to the European Court of Justice, the highest court in the EU.
Neither the European Commission nor Uber immediately responded to a request for comment.
The service continues to expand around the world, aouncing on Tuesday that it will launch in Cardiff, Wales. In Australia, Sydney Airport also said it will soon start allowing Uber pickups.

Bill Gates supports Microsoft, which is suing the US govement.
Bloomberg/Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNETMicrosoft co-founder Bill Gates on Monday expressed his support for the company's wish to inform customers about govement requests for their data.
Despite not being an "absolutist," Gates said gag orders should not automatically be imposed when federal agencies seek access to emails and documents. Instead, privacy advocates and law enforcement should collaborate to strike "the perfect balance," Reuters reports him saying at an event hosted by the publication in Washington.
"There probably are some cases where [the govement] should be able to go in covertly and get information about a company's email," he said, adding that Microsoft believes these should be "extraordinary."
Microsoft filed a lawsuit in federal court last week arguing that gag orders stopping it from informing customers about govement requests violate the US constitution.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple's spat with the FBI is not representative of how many national security requests it complies with.
James Martin/CNETUS law enforcement asked Apple for information 4,000 times, covering 16,112 devices, in the second half of 2015. Apple complied with 80 percent of the requests, according to the company's transparency report, released Monday.
The number of requests Apple received between July and December 2015 increased from the first half of the year, but decreased from the same period in 2014.
The publication of the report follows a recent spat between Apple and the FBI in which the company refused to bypass the security on the iPhone of San Beardino gunman Syed Farook. The figures released this week show that despite refusing the FBI on this occasion, Apple frequently provides help to law enforcement.
Apple received between 1,250 and 1,499 specific national security orders at the end of 2015 and, without giving specific numbers, said that these orders ending up affecting between 1,000 and 1,249 user accounts.
Fewer demands for information regarding devices were honored in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa, which combined made 19,322 requests. Apple only gave out information in 52 percent of cases. Germany made by far the most requests, totalling 11,989.

The Denon HEOS range. All but the HEOS Cinema (top) are due for new Bluetooth and hi-res versions.
DenonDenon has aounced it's refreshing its line of HEOS wireless audio products, differentiated by the HS2 specification, and which now includes features such as Bluetooth and hi-res audio support.
HEOS is Denon's proprietary wireless system that will play streaming services or networked music in a multiroom environment, in a similar way to Sonos or Bluesound.
The new HS2 components will feature upgraded processors in addition to 512MB of flash memory for future updates and 256MB of RAM. This will enable processing for music up to 24-bit/192kHz in addition to support for Sony's DSD format.
The HS2 HEOS 5 ($600/£499/AU$999) and HEOS 7 ($400/£349/AU$689) are available now while the HEOS 1 ($200/£199/$529) and 3 ($300/£249/AU$529) will be available in the US in May/June, and the new Amp ($499/£399/$899) and Link ($349/£299/$599) will come in July. UK and Australian availability of the HS2 components is yet to be confirmed.

The HEOS 1 with Go Pack is water-resistant.
Sarah Tew/CNETA Denon representative confirmed the new range will remain at the same price as the original, though it's unknown whether the $100 Go Pack for the HEOS 1 will change price. The Go Pack includes a now-redundant Bluetooth module in addition to an exteal battery.
If customers have the existing HS1 components in their systems they can add a HS2 speaker to enable hi-res support in their system. The HS2 component will down-convert higher-than-CD music onboard to 16/44.1 to enable it to be played on the existing speakers
Meanwhile HS1 users can alteatively add a $50 USB dongle (which is also part of the existing HEOS 1 Go Pack) if they just want to enable Bluetooth on existing systems.
High-resolution support is of particular interest to audiophiles and people with large collections of music downloads. The upgrade means HEOS is now in line with other Sonos competitors that differentiate themselves from the multiroom giant by offering 24-bit compatibility and Bluetooth -- neither of which Sonos can do.
While competitor Yamaha produces receivers that support its own wireless system called MusicCast, Denon has yet to aounce any receivers that support HEOS.

Spoiler alert: If you are yet to watch the Season 5 finale of "Game of Thrones" and have also managed to avoid a year of headlines about the fate of one particular character, read on at your own peril.
For the rest of us, we've been subject to months of speculation that Jon Snow may not be completely dead, despite being run through with cold, hard steel by most of the Night's Watch when we saw him last. Now, a machine leaing algorithm designed by a team at the Technical University of Munich has analyzed data on all the characters in Westeros, both dead and alive, and concluded that it is very likely that Snow is actually a survivor.
The project, dubbed "A Song of Ice and Data", basically scrapes info from the online Wiki of Ice and Fire encyclopedia, which focuses largely on the series of books by George R.R. Martin, but also covers the HBO show they inspired. Using this data source, two dozen features of each character are statistically compared to try and figure out which features make a character most likely to die.
In other words, if a character who has yet to die in the storyline shares a lot of these features with a character who has already died, the algorithm assigns the still-living character a high probability of eventually biting it.
And by its calculations, the algorithm finds that Jon Snow's character only has an 11 percent chance of dying. That's quite low, especially when compared to the poor boy-King, Tommen Baratheon, who has a 97 percent chance of dying. I'll never understand why everyone wants that creepy Iron Throne so much.
Stais Baratheon, Daenerys Targaryen, Davos Seaworth and Petyr Baelish round out the five characters statistically most likely to die. On the other side of things, Sansa Stark has only a 3 percent chance of dying, followed by Snow, Cersei Laister, Mace Tyrell and Roose Bolton as the top survivors to bet on.
The good news is that in the massive world of Westeros, there's no shortage of characters. In fact, the statistical analysis looked at a total of 2,028 characters that play some part in moving the plot forward in the books. The HBO show also crams a lot of faces into each hour, with over 33 characters in each episode on average and almost 4 (3.88, to be exact) new characters introduced in each installment.
If you think you know better than some fancy computer who will die next on the show's season 6 premiere this Sunday, then you might also be the kind of person to check out our Game of Thrones quiz. We promise you have pretty close to a 100 percent chance of surviving it.

DARPA's dream of a vertical-take-off-and-landing air vehicle is getting closer to fruition, with the first successful flight of a 24-rotor aircraft. Aurora Flight Sciences, which was awarded the Phase 2 contract for the X-Plane program in March this year, successfully flew a subscale model of their LightningStrike aircraft at a military facility in the US.
The model itself is a 20 percent scale model of the aircraft, and weighs 50 kilograms (325 pounds). It's constructed of strong but lightweight carbon fibre and 3D-printed plastics. Controlled by Aurora Flight Sciences persoel on the ground, the craft managed to take off, hover and land, lifted by 24 rotors powered by synchronous motors, like an upscaled, high-tech drone.
There's still some work to complete. The team at Aurora will be attempting to improve both flight speed and hover efficiency over the next year, with a view to a top sustained speed of 400 knots. They'll also be working on the flight system and configuring the full-scale LightningStrike.

A fan thinks Kanye West dissed him and is fighting back with a lawsuit.
Justin Baker-Rhett is suing the hip hop star on claims West lied when he said his album, "The Life of Pablo," would be available only on the streaming service Tidal, according to the proposed class-action suit filed Monday in US District Court in San Francisco.
The lawsuit says some 2 million subscribers signed up for Tidal and gave the struggling service access to $84 million in personal data and credit card information from users by promising exclusive access to the new album release in February.
The Grammy-wiing rapper tweeted in February that "My album will never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale... You can only get it on Tidal."
But not only did the album appear on Tidal, but it was also released on West's web site, iTunes, Pandora, Spotify and other streaming services.

A fan is suing Kanye West claiming the hip hop star lied about making his latest album, "The Life of Pablo," exclusively only on the Tidal streaming music service. The album later appeared on other platforms.
PGFM/MediaPunch/CorbisThe suit, which also names fellow star rapper Jay Z (real name: Shawn Carter), who is also a partner is Tidal, alleges Baker-Rhett "subscribed to Tidal specifically because he was misled into believing that it was the only music platform on which the album would ever be available."
"But it wasn't. It was released on many more platforms than that," said Rafey Balabanian, a managing partner at Edelson PC, which filed the suit on Baker-Rhett's behalf.
The album was released on February 14 and pulled down shortly after it appeared. The album was reportedly illegally downloaded more than 500,000 times from other sites after many fans said they paid $20 to download the album off Tidal but didn't get it.
A West representative didn't immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.

The upgraded specs according to Giant Bomb.
Giant BombWhispers of an upgraded "PlayStation 4.5" began earlier this year, but now firm details are emerging, with the gaming website Giant Bomb citing uamed sources and a leaked inteal document for an upgrade that includes processing, graphics and memory upgrades, as well as 4K resolution.
Called NEO, as Giant Bomb reports, the upgraded console will not have its own exclusive games. Instead, all games must have exactly the same features for PS4 and NEO owners, with the NEO consoles able to run an improved version, such as higher resolution graphics, or more players in local multiplayer.
All games must also have the same peripheral support, and players will all appear on the same PlayStation Network. This is to keep players on both consoles coected.
According to Giant Bomb's report, Sony is expecting developers of NEO games to meet or exceed the original PS4's frame rate, and would like developers to reach for the 4K resolution. In addition, games that have already been released will be able to patch for the upgrades.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Autonomous underwater vehicles are opening up the aquatic domains in more detail than ever before. However, current drone technology is still limited in a few ways, one of which is size, shape and flexibility. With a swimming snake robot, Norwegian engineering company Kongsberg Maritime believes, we could access, survey and monitor hard-to-reach areas.
Together with Norwegian University of Science and Technology spin-off company Eelume and petroleum company Statoil, Kongsberg is developing a sea snake-inspired robot that will reside permanently on the seabed, monitoring underwater equipment and performing maintenance tasks such as adjusting valves -- tasks that are relatively simple to perform, but difficult for humans to access. This should greatly reduce the cost of subsea operations, the team believes.

You know, some people have been hurt in love. It's OK. Maybe those people will consider $1,750 (around about AU$2,250 or £1,220) a small price to pay for peace of mind.
That's how much Spanish company Durmet is asking for the Smarttress, a smart mattress with a built-in "Lover Detection System" (yes, that's what it's called) that will send an alert to your smartphone "whenever someone is using your bed in a questionable way." It uses 24 sensors to detect whenever the mattress starts a-bouncing, then pings the user's Android or iPhone.
It's still in production, but to prove to re/code that the mattress is real, the company sent through this video of the testing process. Of course, if you are really that conceed, a nay-cam will cost you a little less money... although it's worth pointing out that a smart cheater probably won't conduct their extracurricular activities at home.

The US Supreme Court refused to hear a challenge from a group of authors who claim Google Books violates their copyright.
The New York-based trade group The Authors' Guild and several individual authors have been fighting Google Books since 2005, when it first brought the matter to the Supreme Court. In 2013, a US Circuit Judge dismissed the case, arguing that the service fell under fair use.
In October of last year, the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the 2013 ruling. The judges noted that the books were not available in their entirety, and were therefore not a reasonable substitute for the original books.
"The price of this short-term public benefit may well be the future vitality of American culture," said the Authors' Guild's Mary Rasenberger in a statement.
Google said in a statement, "We are grateful that the court has agreed to uphold the decision of the Second Circuit which concluded that Google Books is transformative and consistent with copyright law."
Google didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Federal prosecutors and the US Securities and Exchange Commission have launched criminal and civil investigations into whether blood-testing firm Theranos misled investors about the state of its product. Subpoenas regarding the startup have been sent to Walgreens Boots Alliance and the New York State Department of Health, according to the Wall Street Joual, which first reported the investigations.
"The company continues to work closely with regulators and is cooperating fully with all investigations," Theranos said in a statement.
The US Attoeys Office for the Northe District of Califoia, one of the agencies said to be investigating the startup, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The company has been under scrutiny since a Joual report in October that suggested the company's blood-testing devices were flawed, leading to questions of their accuracy.

Are you too busy to duck outside and check your laundry? Australian laundry detergent brand OMO is developing a smart clothespeg called Peggy embedded with a bunch of sensors that monitor the weather and your laundry.
Thermometers inside the peg monitor the temperature, and a humidity sensor keeps track of the humidity (obviously). Meanwhile, sunlight is monitored using a UV sensor. Paired with a smartphone app via Wi-Fi, the peg uses this information to calculate how long it will take clothes to dry, as well as monitor the weather and make sure you're aware of pending rain.
OMO claims it developed the app in response to research that found 94 percent of parents and grandparents feel they don't get enough playtime with their kids, so there's also a bunch of suggestions for things to do with kids. If you'd rather have the clothespeg because you tend to forget the laundry is out there, or if you don't need parenting tips from a peg, you can probably safely ignore those suggestions.

Male southe grasshopper mouse shouting, mouse-style.
Michael & Patricia Fogden/CORBISMice don't stutter like people do, but by tweaking a gene, scientists have created mice that have the mouse equivalent of the human stutter, and they're using it to understand why we do.
"Speech is obviously a unique human capacity, but the pattes of speech are built out of a lot of building blocks that are much simpler," said senior author Tim Holy, an associate professor of neuroscience, in a statement.
"You have to be able to control the timing of your breath and the fine muscles in your tongue and mouth. You have to be able to initiate movement. Those kinds of things may be shared all the way from mice to people."
Stuttering used to be thought purely a response to emotional distress. However, now we know that some people who stutter have a mutation in a gene called Gnptab. To help figure out how this mutation affects suffering, the research team induced a similar mutation in the mouse version of Gnptab. They published their results in the joual Current Biology.
The mice with modified genes produce litters of pups that vocalise in a repetitive, halting patte similar to humans who stutter, the team found.
"Pups spontaneously vocalise when they are taken from their mom," said first author Terra Baes. "Mice vocalize when they're in pain, when they meet another mouse, or to attract a mate."
Stuttering usually produces pauses in the vocalisations. The key to working out whether the mouse pups were stuttering was an algorithm that analysed the pauses. This analysis was able to ascertain between normal pauses and stuttering pauses. Those mice with the mutation paused for longer between sounds than mice without the mutation. The stuttering mice repeated the same sounds more often, too, much like humans who stutter.
Apart from the stutter, the mice were otherwise healthy, with cognitive leaing ability, memory, balance, coordination skills and physical fitness on a par with the non-stuttering mice. In this respect also, the mice are like humans.
"One of the things we find scientifically interesting about stuttering is that it is so precisely limited to speech," Holy said. "It's a very clean defect in an incredibly complex task."
Using this research, the team is now plaing further studies to try and figure out both how the genetic mutation can be treated, and exactly relates to stuttering, which is still unclear. Mostly, Gnptab is involved in the process of breaking down and recycling larger molecules into smaller molecules.
"It's kind of crazy that this gene that's involved in digesting the garbage in your cells is somehow linked to something so specific as stuttering," Holy said.
"It could be that the protein has many functions and this mutation affects only one of them. Or the mutation could very mildly compromise the function of the protein, but there's a set of cells in the brain that is exquisitely sensitive, and if you ever so slightly compromise the function in those cells you get the observable behavioural deficit."

It seems Siri knows what she's talking about, at least when it comes to when Apple's aual developers conference will be held.
Apple said Monday that its Worldwide Developers Conference will officially kick off in San Francisco on Monday, June 13, and run through Friday, June 17. That aouncement confirmed the answer you get if you ask Apple's personal digital assistant on the iPhone or iPad.
The aouncement hinted at some of the products that will be discussed at the conference.
"WWDC 2016 is going to be a landmark event for developers who are coding in Swift, and building apps and products for iOS, OS X, watchOS and tvOS," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement.
The keynote address will be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, while the rest of the conference's sessions will take place at the Moscone West convention center, as it has in past years.

Following its standard playbook, expect Apple at the event to unveil the first official details on its next generation of operating systems for the full range of its hardware empire -- most notably iOS 10 for iPhones and iPads and the successor to the current El Capitan version of OS X for Macs. We may also hear about new features and improvements coming to WatchOS, the software behind the Apple Watch.
While the event remains targeted at app developers and software partners, the opening keynote from CEO Tim Cook is sometimes used as a launchpad for new Apple products and services, such as the big unveiling of Apple Music at last year's event. But with the iPhone SE and new iPad Pro having just been launched, don't be surprised if minor Mac refreshes are the only new items Apple shows off at the event -- if, indeed, there's any new hardware on display at all. (The presumed iPhone 7 is expected to hit in September, as is a potential Apple Watch sequel, if Apple follows its standard release schedule.)
Tickets always sell out in minutes, so potential attendees should be on guard.
Update, 4:40 p.m. PT: Adds Apple confirmation.

Jia Jia may have the best robot eyebrows ever.
New China TV screenshot by Leslie Katz/CNETUncay Valley, thy name is Jia Jia.
Researchers on Friday introduced the stuingly realistic-looking interactive humanoid robot to the world, and she reacted by nodding her head, squinting, moving her hand and eyeballs and telling assembled local photographers, with her speech synched to her lip movements, to snap her face from a more flattering angle. Girl's got spirit.
Jia Jia made her public debut at the University of Science and Technology of China, where she came to life over the course of three years. While her rosy cheeks and pink lips make her look like she has blood ruing through her actuators, she still has a way to go before she'll be confused with a human. Her expressions are currently limited to "microexpressions" and her speech has that distinct stiffness that screams "I am a robot and I will one day chase you from your home."
Still, her creators claim their "robot goddess" in the making is one of the most lifelike robots ever made, and it's hard to argue with that assessment. And she may get even more so.
She can't yet laugh or cry, but "we hope to develop the robot so it has deep leaing abilities," Xinhuanet quoted team leader Chen Xiaoping as saying. "We will add facial expression recognition and make it interact more deeply with people."
Jia Jia will make an appearance at the China Inteational Technology Fair in Shanghai later this month, but it's unclear what her ultimate purpose in life will be.

Drone racers hope their sport could go mainstream. Hit play on the video above to get an inside look at how first-person view (FPV) drone racing works, and what its star pilots hope the future has in store.
"I really think the sport's just going to keep growing and growing and growing," says drone racing world champion Luke Baister, who back in March nabbed first prize in a global drone racing contest in Dubai.
"Considering how far it's gone in about a year, from people flying around their local park or whatever, to flying inside stadiums. I think it's just going to keep growing, and hopefully it becomes a professional sport."
Drone racing is best described as a cross between Formula 1 and Star Wars' fictional sport of podracing. Quick reactions are a must as pilots zip their machines around a defined course, all the time wearing headsets that deliver a live feed from the nose of their drone. There are even pit stops to change batteries.
One obstacle that could stand in the way of drone racing's mainstream appeal is that, on a practical level, it's not that easy to follow. It can be hard to tell which tiny drone is in the lead when they're on the other side of the course, illuminated only by a few coloured LEDs. Tech could alleviate this -- for instance racing drones have cameras strapped to them, so spectators could follow a stream of what the drones are seeing on a smartphone or tablet.

Kaleidoscope is also a community for artists and anyone else building VR experiences.
Ayden AramzeBilling itself as a showcase for "the best in virtual reality film, art, and immersive experiences", the Kaleidoscope World Tour is the VR equivalent of a travelling film festival.
After starting in Paris last month, the showcase embarked on a whistle-stop tour of the world: 10 cities in just 42 days. It wrapped up in Melboue, Australia, where I got to have a look at some of the 30-plus experiences on offer.
Kaleidoscope is not only the name of the festival, it's a community of visual artists, developers, filmmakers and anyone else working on VR experiences. Nick Ochoa is the global VR evangelist for Kaleisoscope, a role that also seems to include a lot of community wrangling.
"We noticed the compelling VR content that we were seeing was being done by small groups of talented artists, just like us," said Ochoa. "So we decided that we wanted to be a studio for these artists and we want to bring these artists in. That's Kaleidoscope, really. It's not just us but all the artists in our community who work with us to build projects, to create things."
For the most part, Kaleidoscope offered short, 360-degree video experiences. There's an argument to be made that VR and 360-degree video need to be differently defined, that true virtual reality should be interactive rather than passive. You're welcome to make that argument, but I think that boat has sailed for VR purists.
"We're here to celebrate the pioneers," said Ochoa. "People aren't making money on this yet. It's financed by artists themselves with their blood, sweat and tears."
With only a few hours and limited VR headsets, I didn't get to watch everything. But there were some big standouts from what I did see.
Now imagine this in VR.
Kaleidoscope VRThe first is "Mad God" on the Oculus Rift, directed by Phil Tippet. I'm sorry, I mean Oscar wier Phil Tippett. He shared in the Visual Effects Academy Awards for both "Retu of the Jedi" and "Jurassic Park". It's a surrealistic, stop-motion animated experience that is enhanced by a haptic feedback vest. The vest provides physical vibration for some of the more kinetic effects and basso profundo sounds.
It's the first time I've tried this sort of haptic feedback in VR, and it's frankly amazing. It adds an extra layer and makes the two-minute long "Mad God" into something almost overwhelming.
"Tana Pura" was another standout. Experienced via the Samsung Gear VR, "Tana Pura" is initially a seemingly random display of shapes and colours, all set to a score from Radiohead's Joy Greenwood. It's directed by Mike Tucker, who works at secretive startup Magic Leap, adding an air of mystery to the film. (Magic Leap is working on a "mixed reality" project that's been valued at US$4.5 billion, despite no one quite knowing what they do.)
It's based, in part, on the Tibetan Book of the Dead and is intended to represent the soul's jouey in the afterlife. It's also subtly interactive, changing depending on your head movements. It doesn't have the punch of "Mad God", but I found myself reflecting on it later that night...and for a while afterwards.
Colosse from Joseph Chen.
Kaleidoscope VRA final experience that made an impression is "Colosse", from Joseph Chen. Like "Tana Pura", it has some small interactivity based on the Gear VR's head tracking, but the story is more narrative. It also has wonderful stylised art and an Arctic colour scheme that I really enjoyed.
With themes of power, fear and perhaps even greed, it comes across like a mode telling of an ancient legend, with a rather disquieting ending that's almost at odds with the gentle art style.
It's a little odd to see just how much intriguing work was on display, given that the majority of the content was made during what Ochoa calls "the dev-kit era", before the commercial availability of VR hardware.
"The tools and the distribution platforms and the things that are going to support the VR market are being created right now," said Ochoa. "So what's going to happen once they are out, once people have time with them? I'm just really excited to see what happens next year".

The Kaleidoscope festival, basically the equivalent of a film festival for virtual reality, shows off and awards the best VR art, films and immersive experiences.
"We're here to celebrate the pioneers," said Nick Ochoa, global VR evangelist for Kaleisoscope. "People aren't making money on this yet. It's financed by artists themselves with their blood, sweat and tears."
Here's a look at the wiers from the Kaleidoscope VR World Tour 2016. "Clouds" won the Kaleidoscope Award for Best Documentary.

Season 6 of "Game of Thrones" is coming faster than a White Walker in winter, but do you even remember what happened in season 5? After all, it's been months (that's centuries in Westeros time) since Theon and Sansa took their big leap and Jon Snow, well...did he or didn't he?
In preparation for Sunday's premiere, we've put together a "Thrones" trivia quiz that spans all the show's seasons. Do you know nothing or could you outwit the likes of Varys and Littlefinger? Once you've proven your mettle in battle with the "Thrones" test, you'll want to test your wits against our upcoming George R.R. Martin quiz later this week.
And if you plan to tweet the premiere Sunday, be sure to add the #GoTCNET hastag to your stabby stabby sexy sexy observations. We'll share our favorite reader tweets on Monday. Because a Laister always shares his reader's tweets.
